Derby Cathedral to host radio broadcast

DERBY Cathedral will once again host BBC Radio 3’s popular Choral Evensong programme this week when it is broadcast live from the Cathedral tomorrow, Wednesday September 12, 3.30pm.

The opportunity to broadcast the daily diet of readings, canticles, hymns, prayers and an anthem is an excellent way of bringing the life and work of the Cathedral to the attention of a wider audience.

Master of the Music at Derby Cathedral, Peter Gould, said: “Derby Cathedral feels very honoured to be invited to broadcast on Radio 3 so regularly [about once every 18 months] as not all cathedrals are asked to do this.”

He added: “The service of Evensong has ancient roots and can be heard in many Parish Churches and every cathedral daily where it is often sung. I have written a descant for the final hymn specially for the broadcast. Doing something like this raises our standards and profile and puts us amongst the professionals in the land.”
