THE future of Post Office services in New Mills look secure despite the proposed sale of the Spar store where it is located.
Fears had been expressed that the post office could be lost if as expected Sainsbury’s acquire the Torr Top Street store.
County Councillor Beth Atkins said that the future of the post office had been uncertain as Sainsbury’s did not usually incorporate them.
“Initially, I talked to both Sainsbury’s and the Post Office about the situation, expressing my concerns that every effort should be made to find someone to take on the business – as it is vital that we retain the Post Office in the village.
“My latest discussion with the Network Development Manager at Post Office Ltd has been reassuring.
“Talks are progressing with Sainsbury’s – who have appointed a Temporary Agent to sort out the takeover; Sainsbury’s are interested in retaining the Post Office on the site though there are various financial and logistical details to be ironed out.”
She said that as a fall-back option she has started to explore the possibility of a community-run Post Office.
“Luckily, at the moment, things are looking positive for a normal business outcome,” she said.
Town Councillor Ian Huddlestone, told the Town Council on Monday: “The New Mills rumour mill has been having a bit of fun with this.
“Things are still going on but the Post Office will be staying in New Mills.”
