A Buxton man was shot in the town on Sunday evening, behind the Prince of Wales pub, on the Cliff Road steps as he walked home with his wife.
The 52-year-old, who does not wish to be named, said at about 7pm he felt a sharp pain in his lower back and after lifting his jumper discovered he was bleeding.
After seeking medical attention, he said that fragments of a pellet were found in the wound.
He said he did not see what happened.
Police are looking into the incident.
