A man who stole toiletries from a Buxton store just five days after being released from prison has been given a suspended sentence.

A customer in the Tesco Express store on October 1 noticed a male taking items from the shelf and putting them in a plastic bag before leaving the store without paying and alerted staff, High Peak Magistrates’ Court heard.

The shop’s CCTV was checked and Wayne Mellor was seen taking five or six shampoo-type bottles, prosecutor Jennifer Fitzgerald said.

Mellor had only been released from prison for offences of shoplifting on September 26, the court heard.

The 25-year-old, of Macclesfield Road, admitted the theft.

Karina Lyon, defending, said: “Unfortunately for this gentleman, he had got into a very difficult position.

“He had no money when he got out of prison and his benefits hadn’t started so he stole items to sell to get money for food.”

He was jailed for ten weeks, suspended for 12 months, and must also pay £15 compensation to the Tesco Express store.
