Stole booze and two vacuum cleaners

Staff at the Co-operative on Norfolk Street noticed Ian Moore enter the shop and head for the alcohol aisle on March 7, High Peak Magistrates’ Court heard.

He was seen to select two bottles of Jack Daniel’s whisky from the shelf before entering a queue to pay for them, prosecutor John Cooper said.

But after a couple of minutes of waiting in the queue, Moore then went back to the shelf before running from the shop with the alcohol.

Police were called and Moore said he had taken the whisky to sell so he could pay for electricity, gas and food.

After running from the shop, he dropped one of the bottles, smashing it, and sold the other for £10.

Moore, 32, of Manor Park Road, Glossop, admitted shoplifting.

He was on a community order for a previous matter of theft after admitting stealing two Dyson vacuum cleaners from his employer JD Williams, the court heard.

Mr Cooper said Moore had taken the hoovers to the rear of the premises before throwing them over a fence to retrieve later. He later sold them for £40 each.

He had twice breached the order and completed just one hour of the 210 hours of unpaid work he had been given.

Magistrates revoked the community order and re-sentenced him for both offences.

Ian Baker, defending, said of the Co-op theft: “His benefits had been stopped because he had not kept an appointment with the job centre. He had got no money at all so he went to the Co-op and thought he would steal two bottles of Jack Daniel’s.”

Moore was given 14 weeks in prison suspended for 12 months for the vacuum cleaner theft and four weeks in prison to run consecutively, but also suspended for 12 months, for the alcohol theft.

He was also given an 18-week curfew between 7pm and 7am.

No order was made for costs but he must pay £53.38 compensation for the alcohol.
