A ROW over an ex-partner escalated and resulted in a Buxton man assaulting his then girlfriend, a court heard.

John David Lewis, 42, of Fairfield Road, had been at the home of Heather Kay McDonagh on June 18, John Cooper prosecuting told High Peak magistrates on Monday.

During the argument Lewis had grabbed her by the ear, causing a cut to the rear of her ear, and had grabbed her arm causing bruising.

James Riley, defending, said both parties had been drinking and the injuries had occurred during a grapple and struggle between the two.

“He doesn’t drink during the week but at weekend does binge drink and this is where the problems arise.”

The court heard that Lewis, in full-time employment, had already sought assistance to address his drinking.

Lewis told the court: “I do feel really bad about it.”

He was fined £228, and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 government surcharge.
