Police were called to the scene at 3.10am on February 17 and arrived to find Spencer Michael Edmonds asleep in the driver’s seat, with the keys in the ignition, the bonnet still warm, and a bottle of vodka in the passenger seat, prosecutor Jennifer Fitzgerald told High Peak Magistrates’ Court.

He failed a roadside breath test and at the police station, he provided a reading of 108. The legal limit is 35.

In interview, he admitted driving the car after a row with his girlfriend and said he had pulled over to go to sleep on the A6 because of a problem with the clutch.

The 41-year-old, of Bingham Park Road, Sheffield, admitted being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle.

Kirsten Collings, defending, said he had a bottle of wine at his partner’s address earlier in the evening. “He had been expecting to stay there,” she added.

He was fined £300, ordered to pay £85 costs and a £30 surcharge and banned from driving for six months.
