Arrest by off-duty officer

An off-duty police officer arrested a man on suspicion of shoplifting after being alerted by another shopper.

The officer was at the Late Shop, in Eccles Road, Chapel-en-le-Frith, at around 8pm on Friday, July 15, when a fellow shopper said he believed a man had stolen several bottles of champagne.

The constable chased the man to a nearby taxi and restrained him until other officers arrived. The 46-year-old, from Stockport, was later charged.
