Businesses are being asked to come forward by police investigating a suspected advertising scam in Buxton.
The move comes after a number of reports about a man allegedly going into businesses to sell advertising space on behalf of football clubs or directories.
Police are asking businesses to contact them if they have been approached by someone trying to sell advertising during the past few weeks.
A local fish and chip shop paid around £40 for what they believed to be advertising space on a Buxton FC wall planner and a town centre pub paid around the same fee for what they thought was space in the ‘Good Pub Guide’.
Officers are also investigating a further four reports from businesses who had been visited by the same man but did not pay out.
The man is described as white, around six feet tall, with a large build and short hair.
He has been reported to speak with a Liverpool accent.
Police would like to hear from any other businesses that may have been approached by this man.
Anyone with information should contact Derbyshire police on 101, the non-emergency number, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
