A CHANCE meeting led to 60 years of marriage for a Buxton couple.
John and Elsie Edge, of Edensor Avenue, celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary today (Thursday), and will be marking the occasion with a family get-together.
The doting couple first met on Buxton Slopes and courted for 18 months before getting married by special licence in Chapel-en-le-Frith Registrar Office on June 23, 1951, a month before John left to serve with the army in the Korean War.
Following his return to the UK, John and Elsie lived in Buxton for 42 years, in between periods spent in Chinley and Chapel, before eventually moving back to Fairfield, where John was born.
Elsie, originally from Chesterfield, was employed as a screen printer at Bernard Wardles until marriage and then worked part-time in various hotels. John worked as a lorry driver, before spending the last 15 years of his career working for the electricity board.
The couple, both aged 78, have three daughters. Their son sadly passed away recently. They also have seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
John said: “I don’t know where the years have gone. It certainly doesn’t seem so long. Sixty years is quite an achievement.”
