WORLD champion boxer Jawaid Khaliq MBE has opened a new community gym at Fairfield Youth Centre.
In the first partnership of its kind, Derbyshire County Council and Derbyshire Police have teamed up to extend the successful Ozbox project which offers boxing-based fitness sessions.
Council funding of £462,000 to provide gyms will help more youngsters get involved over the next three years.
Councillor Pam Reddy, DCC Cabinet Support Member for Young People, said: “This innovative way of working is the first of its kind in the High Peak.
“Young people are encouraged to channel their energies in a positive direction, to take pride in themselves and in their local community.”
High Peak and Derbyshire Dales Chief Inspector Tim Frohwein said: “We hope the young people of Fairfield will relish this opportunity to take part and may even be encouraged to take the sport further.”
