A NEW Mills cemetery has been trebled in size, ensuring that it meets the town’s needs for the next three decades.
The High Peak Borough Council project to open up land to the rear of Thornsett Cemetery took just three weeks to complete – five weeks less than anticipated – and was finished comfortably within budget.
Councillor Tim Norton, Executive Member of Corporate Services, has thanked contractor Whitehouse Construction for the sensitivity shown.
“Although this type of work is hard to manage discreetly, we didn’t have a single complaint – because the contractors operated considerately throughout, stopping for funerals and screening the site so that works weren’t too intrusive for cemetery visitors.”
Creating access to the large field to the rear has expanded the cemetery threefold so that the site has space for further expansion. The council is now making arrangements to have the new area blessed by local clergy.
