Dedicated volunteers are working hard to clean up a former plant nursery which campaigners are hoping will become a food education centre.

The Serpentine Project aims to create a community facility which will not only see sustainable food production on the site but also lessons in growing and processing your own produce.

The project at Serpentine park is being driven by Transition Buxton with support from Buxton Town Team, The University of Derby and Buxton and Leek College.

While the legal process of setting up a formal body to oversee the project continues, volunteers have cleared 20 trees and a jungle of brushwood from the site to allow some crops to be planted in the spring.

Janine Morris, of the Transition team, said anyone was welcome to join them.

She added: “The commitment of volunteers shows how highly the project is valued.

“Working parties have been clearing the ground and having great fun getting boots on the ground.”
