A Buxton man has been jailed as part of a police crackdown on shoplifting in the town.

Brian Spencer, 43, of South Street, Buxton, appeared at Chesterfield magistrates' court last Thursday and was sentenced to 28 weeks in prison for stealing from three shops in the town over the past month.

Meanwhile, Zoe Byrne, 41, of Spring Gardens, Buxton, has been arrested and charged with two counts of theft from the Co-operative store on Spring Garden. She has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

The conviction and charge comes as part of the Operation Cracker campaign, which launched earlier this month.

As part of the crackdown, officers are carrying out increased patrols around Buxton over the festive season in a bid to deter thieves and catch shoplifters in the act.
