Green-fingered community champions are being invited to dust off their trowels and help deck out the town in vibrant summer colours.
Entries are now open in this year’s Buxton in Bloom competition, organised by Buxton Town Team, with four categories aimed at showcasing the town’s creativity, its gardens and green spaces.
Explaining the reason behind this year’s theme of ‘very, very vibrant’ and ‘hot, hot, hot’, Viv Marriott, project leader for Buxton in Bloom, said: “We can never be sure of constant sunshine in Buxton, so we wanted to make sure that the town still basks in brightness.
“Hopefully this will encourage people to let their imaginations run wild.”
The four categories are: best garden – private or commercial; best hanging basket(s) or planter(s); best school garden; best flowerpot person or people.
The flowerpot person and hanging basket/planter categories in particular are aimed at people without a garden or green space, with organisers hoping to encourage greater participation from local shops and businesses.
“Some shops, businesses and community groups have been particularly good hosting flowerpot people in aid of, or raising awareness of, a particular charity.”
An exciting new addition for 2017 is the Flowerpot People of Buxton Trail. Anyone entering a flowerpot creation into the Bloom competition will have the option of having its location included on a trail map, which will be sold by the town team to raise funds towards local projects.
Flowerpot people can remain in place from the beginning of June until September.
The town team will also be organising workshops throughout the summer, offering tips on how to make the best flowerpot people or floral decorations.
More information about these and the dates, will be revealed at www.buxtontownteam.org and on the town team’s Facebook page.
To enter Buxton in Bloom, simply return a completed entry form to Buxton Town Team, c/o Town Hall, Buxton, SK17 6EL, or email entry details to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The closing date for all entries is Monday July 10, but to be included on the Flowerpot People of Buxton trail map they must be returned by Friday June 16.
All entries must be easily visible from the road or footpath, with the exception of school entries, as judges will not enter the property.
Judging will take place during the first two weeks of August for all categories, and the presentation of prizes will take place on Sunday September 3.
More than one category can be entered. Entries from members of the Bloom team or judges are not permitted.
