A Buxton church has been thwarted in its bid to find a solution to its rising energy costs.

High Peak Borough Council has refused planning permission for the installation of photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof of Buxton Methodist Church to generate renewable energy.

The application requested permission for two blocks of 22 black PV panels on the roof facing Chapel Street, arranged to incorporate within them the symbol of the Cross.

However, the council stated: “The panels by virtue of their size, siting, projection and materials would result in an unacceptable and alien feature... to the detriment of the architectural quality and character of the building and conservation area.”
