Every year, Buxton’s Royal British Legion president embarks on a 700-mile poppy pilgrimage to the Belgian battlefields of Ypres.

Mike Gray, of Fairfield, completed this year’s road trip on his Honda CBF motorbike last month, laying a wreath at the site to commemorate all those from the Buxton area who fell during the First World War.

The retired lieutenant colonel attended the last post ceremony at the Menin Gate, which takes place every day of the year at 8pm to remember casualties from both world wars.

He also visited several graveyards, including Mons, where the first shots were fired and the first Victoria Cross was awarded to a member of the British Exhibitionery Force.
