A full audience packed Buxton’s historic Devonshire Dome to see hair and beauty students from Buxton and Leek College compete against each other in their

second annual showcase event.

And there were some ghoulish creations on view as media make-up students competed for the first time with `Fright Night` among the 15 different categories. Trainees from the two college campuses were given just half an hour to interpret a theme in front of a panel of judges and the live audience to show off their skills in hair and makeup on a live model.

Guest judges included one of last year’s winners – Laura Lines, who is now a self-employed hairdresser. She said: “I am more nervous judging the competition than I was last year when I took part and won the Avant Garde hair prize.”

Judge Louise Godsil, from suppliers Ellisons, said: “There is so much effort that has gone into this competition and it’s such a lovely atmosphere, we really wanted to award second and third prizes as well as first but each category can only have one winner.

“When you consider that some of the competitors are only 14, the skills that they are showing are just amazing.”

Media make-up student, Ryan Bowles, 18, from Glossop won first prize for his ghoulish creation of a zombie modelled on his sister, Ashley. He said: “I’m not a very confident person and I was so convinced I hadn’t won, I was going to go home early. I’m really enjoying creating special effects with make-up though and I’m aiming to go on to Uni to further my training.”

Another student from Stockport, Anna Smith aged 22, won the Level 3 Hair competition for her pure creative fantasy creation on an underwater theme. She said: “It’s a bit of a different take on a mermaid; I’ve gone for a fish theme and am very happy and excited to win. I couldn’t have done it without my employers at Blakes - The Art of Hair in New Mills backing me.”

Level 2 Hair student Emma Stockley from Forsbrook took the prize for her `Colours of the Season’ hair creation featuring a `summer queen` look. She said: “I am really happy and did not expect to come away a winner.”

Competitions winners were announced at the end of the event by Karen Wardley, head of curriculum for Hair and Beauty, and presented with their prizes by College Principal Len Tildsley:
