Buxton and High Peak Samaritans are looking for volunteers with a number of information events for potential new recruits being held.

New volunteers take part in a selection process, followed by a comprehensive training course, including mentoring, delivered by experienced Samaritans volunteers from the branch.

Volunteers are asked to commit to regular three-hour shifts a week, mostly in the evening or at night. They work from the branch listening to and supporting people who call the helpline. They also answer emails and texts, and speak to people who call in for face-to-face support.

Branch director Maria Kenyon said: “Samaritans work is hugely varied and our volunteers find it incredibly rewarding.

“We are a very diverse team and despite our demanding work, we managed to have a good deal of fun together.

“We would be very happy to hear from anyone who thinks they would like to join us.

“If you’d like to know more about learning the skills needed to support people in distress or despair, we would love to hear from you.”

The first information event is on Friday April 10 at 7pm at 22 Hardwick Street, Buxton. Others are taking place on June 8, August 8 and November 11.
