TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp has opened a new chapter for Buxton businesswoman Jo Harratt by featuring her craftwork in a new book.

Jo was filmed at the Great Yorkshire Show for Kirstie’s Handmade Britain TV show on Channel four.

And she found out later that the Location, Location, Location frontwoman had included one of her cushions – which features a view of Whitby on the front and a “postcard” on the back – in her latest book, Kirstie Allsopp’s Craft.

The cushion is part of Jo’s Elf Designs range of unique handmade gifts using felt from Merino fleece, vintage fabric and for the finishing touches gorgeous ribbons and buttons.

Thirty-five-year-old Jo, of Hogshaw Drive, uses ages-old felting techniques: felt is handmade, from wool fleece, using needle and wet felting techniques.

Wet felting uses a wet fleece and soap which produces a matting affect, while the needle felting process uses a barbed needle to tangle the fleece together to create the required shapes.

Raw materials include Merino, Alpaca and Angora fleece, with a mix of fibre wools and silk.

“I went on a felt making course two years ago and just got addicted to it,” said Jo, who sells her products via her website www.elfdesigns.co.uk

“It’s mega-busy,” she said.
