Students' music business goes live

STUDENTS at the University of Derby Buxton are mixing their business with your pleasure by staging gigs at the Spa Bar.

Touchwood Sonix is a Promotions and Record Company set up and run by students at the Uni's Buxton campus.

"We are all studying Music Technology and Music Practice," said Managing Director Emma Thurlby.

"The company was set up a year ago by course tutor Martyn Watson and is run by a mixture of Music Tech and Music Practice students. Since the start of this academic year there has been more emphasis on music tech students running the events and promotions side of the company and the practice groups performing."

As there is so much talent within the music department, this company has been set up to help showcase the student's hard work.

"To do this we manage, run and promote local live music events within the Buxton area at which many of the students perform," said Emma.

"Many of our events are at the Spa Bar, which is now the official Students Union bar for our campus.

"Each academic year we put on six live music events at this venue with ranging themes, this allows music tech students to set up and run events from a sound management perspective and the music practice groups get a chance to use and develop their live performance skills.

"These events aren't just for students, anyone is more than welcome to come and have a listen and hopefully enjoy the music that we perform.

Alongside the events at the Spa Bar we also put on lunchtime gigs at the Boiler House, which is on campus and is a common room for students to attend during their break.

"This provides an alternative event for the students of the University and also provides us with a chance to show other students what we do.," said Emma.

"As part of the company we have a committee, which mainly consists of music tech students and a representative from the practice courses. This committee is responsible not only for managing the events but also web promotion, poster and flyer design and circulating, designing and selling promotional items for people to buy, filming and photography of the events, press promotion, and most importantly we are the sound team and stage management for all the events.

"Recently we worked with Macclesfield Town Football Club to produce 3 radio adverts to be played on Silk FM advertising the use of the McIlroy Suite and the club's next game.

"This was really successful and the Chief Executive Patrick Nelson was extremely pleased with our work on this project."

The club produced a special feature on their website thanking the students and hoping it was the start of a long-term partnership.

Dates for the Spa Bar events this year:
