BUXTON’s Joanne Hibbert has had a lucky start to the year after winning £1,000 in cash and vouchers thanks to a competition aimed at boosting the town’s independent businesses.

Joanne, of Gretton Road, Fairfield, was the first prize winner in Buxton Town Team’s Christmas Shopping Crawl, which was set up to encourage people to visit the town’s range of retailers.

Participants were asked to take a crawl map round to each of the 30 participating businesses and get it marked. Claire Stamp from Chapel-en-le-Frith won the second prize of £200 in cash and vouchers, with Pauline McGowan of Mill Cliff, Buxton, taking third prize of £100 to spend on a meal at the Dome fine dining restaurant at the University of Derby.

All of the winners were chosen in a prize draw and the prizes were presented at a special event held at the Green Man Gallery, Buxton, last Thursday.

Jean Ball, from Buxton Town Team, said: “We are fairly certain that no-one was familiar with all the stars on the map before the crawl.

“One energetic couple completed the whole crawl in a day, which the winners will testify was quite an achievement.”

Statistics from the event so far show that on average, each shop stamped 40 maps, 58 per cent of participants were new to the business and 21 per cent of participants bought something on their first visit to that business.

The Town Team would like to thank all the businesses on the map for helping to make the Christmas Shopping Crawl a success, and all those who took part in and supported the event.
