It pays to advertise in the Advertiser, says 2011 winner
Zoe Keeling winner of the Business Accelerator competition
Winning our Local Business Accelerators top prize last year was music to Zoe Keeling’s ears...
Her £8,000 worth of advertising came at just the right time for her Muzik and More shop, which was just entering its third year in business.
“The advertising was good, and lots of people read the articles I had in (about the competition),” said Zoe.
“It raised the profile of the shop. It’s been the hardest year for retail this year, and it really helped in the difficult months, the fact that I won advertising which I wouldn’t have been able to afford.
“It goes to show that advertising in local papers does pay.”
Despite the tough economic times, the year has had some musical high notes for Zoe.
“It feels like the shop has got a bit of magic,” she said.
Not only did one of the guitarists featured in one of her open mic sessions get a gig at the Acoustic Guitar Show in London, but her friend Lucy Spraggan – who launched her first album at Muzik and More - has become an X-Factor sensation, winning millions of fans across the world with her witty self-penned songs.
And Lucy’s family have added another string to Zoe’s bow.
Her mum and stepdad Colin, who used to run the Violin Shop on Buxton Market Place, trained Zoe to take over their violin care and maintenance business before they moved to Kent.
Last year’s second prize of £4,366 worth of advertising went to Mark Anthony Cycles, who want to use it to promote cycle hire in the town and hopefully create new jobs, while third prize of £3,409 worth of advertising is awarded to Fairfield Plaice, the chip shop which has won national awards for its environmentally-friendly policies.
