Could Andrew be an Olympic contender?

BAMFORD-based Andrew Randall's archery career is right on target for international success.

The 15-year-old Hope Valley College student has already been the top-scoring boy in a regional competition in which the East Midlands won against the Northern Counties.

This event was the first outing for a new set of arrows which were purchased through sponsorship from Lafarge Cement's Hope Works.

The Lafarge donation also paid for a small but very important piece of equipment: a pressure button which controls the direction of the arrow as it is released from the bow.

From this regional event, Andrew went on to be part of the winning team representing England in the Home Nations competition at the National Outdoor Championships.

He is now waiting to find out about two opportunities which could see his archery prowess taken to another level – he has been shortlisted from 60 archers down to four to be considered for the Great Britain performance development squad; and he has been added to a possible list for selection for the Australian Youth Olympic Festival which takes place in January 2009.

Hope Works manager Ashley Bryan said: "It has been a pleasure to see Andrew's sporting career go from strength to strength, and I am pleased Lafarge has been able to support him.

"We very much hope he goes on to more national and international accolades; maybe we will see him feature in the London 2012 Olympics!"

Andrew added: "It makes a big difference having support from sponsors like Lafarge and I hope I can report back to them with more success into the future."
