High Peak business leaders joined forces to launch the Buxton Spa Prize at the Old Hall Hotel.

Artists who enter the competition will receive a location by ballot rather than choose their own subject and it is hoped that most artists will choose to paint on location, leading to the prospect of having a town filled with artists painting throughout May and June 2014.

“The Buxton Spa Prize will bookend the existing festival season, providing another reason for people to visit,” said Suzanne Pearson, Buxton Spa Prize Director. “Not only will it provide artists with a wonderful visit to Buxton, but it will encourage more tourism and enhance local people’s lives – as the subject of the art is Buxton itself, we expect a great deal of local interest”.

The prize has already gained support and sponsorship from local organisations and businesses, including the University of Derby Buxton who are sponsoring the event.

The prize will run throughout 2014, with entries opening in spring. To find out more, see www.BuxtonSpaPrize.co.uk.
