THE FAMILY of a Buxton youngster with chronic kidney failure are appealing for help to build a small extension to their home.
Thomas Maxwell Harrison, 11, will need to have dialysis treatment and the hope is that a new bedroom and bathroom would enable the treatment to be carried out at home.
Mum Sara explained: "We hope to be able to have home dialysis but we need extra space and a bathroom for that to take place."
Thomas, who has had the condition since birth, has undergone numerous operations including one last year to remove a kidney that had failed.
The remaining organ will continue to deteriorate and dialysis will be needed. He will also be put on the transplant waiting list.
Without an extension to the family home at Oaklea, Thomas, who attends Buxton Junior School, will have to go to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury, three or four times a week.
The youngster has to take 17 tablets a day and an injection at night to help him grow as he is small for his age.
He has also had to have a urostomy - a bag which collects urine so he doesn't need to go the toilet. Unfortunately this means he has to change his bag regularly.
A new bedroom and bathroom for Thomas, who has three brothers, would also help him to be more independent.
"I think people with children will understand that he needs a bit more privacy," said Sara.
"I have never asked for help before but now he is getting bigger I feel we need a bit of help."
