Historic landmark is being allowed to rot

FEARS have been raised that a prominent Buxton landmark – which forms a popular gateway to the town – is being "left to rot".
David Pilkington, from Chapel-en-le-Frith, contacted the Advertiser to express his concern over the state of the frontage at Buxton Railway Station.
The gabled screen wall, which features a large fan-shaped window, is Grade II Listed and belongs to rail freight operator English Welsh and Scottish Railways Ltd (EWS).
But damage to the window framework and glass has left it looking in a "dilapidated state", according to Mr Pilkington.
"I was so appalled at the broken glass, and weeds and saplings growing out of the stonework. It is a gateway to Buxton and it is in a terrible state," he said.
"Other towns such as Scarborough have stations which have been modernised, as they are gateways to a resort and give the first impression of a place when visitors arrive.
"People just seem to take it for granted. They go past it every day and don't bother to take in the state it's in.
"Year in, year out, it is like the Crescent, just left to rot."
High Peak Borough Council and EWS have been in talks over repairs to the property, and its future use.
A spokesperson for EWS added: "Consideration is being given to a number of proposals that would regenerate this facility while retaining the Grade II Listed features."
