HIGH Peak Borough Council looks set to elect a new leader after Councillor John Faulkner announced, on Monday, that he does not intend to continue in the role.
Councillor Faulkner, member for Burbage in Buxton, had been Council Leader since the local elections in May 2007 when the Conservative group took control of the council.

His decision to step down is for personal reasons.

Previously he was an Executive member of the Liberal Democrat and Conservative Coalition.

Speaking on behalf of the High Peak Conservative Group, Deputy Group Leader and Deputy Leader of the Council, Councillor Tony Ashton said: "We are all saddened at John's decision.

"In his five years on the Council Executive John has been the principal architect of the continued low Council Tax increases enjoyed by High Peak residents since 2003.

"As Leader of the Council since last May John has led the way in setting up the ground-breaking alliance with Staffordshire Moorlands District Council. He is a man of vision, integrity and principle.

"He will be greatly missed as Leader, but we are delighted that he will continue to working hard on the Council to represent the residents of Burbage Ward and with the Conservative Group to deliver the best local services for High Peak."

A new Leader will be announced at the Annual Council Meeting on Tuesday May 13.
