Going the extra mile for Martha
PREMIERSHIP footballer Christopher Samba is to help start Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College's Martha Mile, in aid of the 'Find a Cure for Martha' Campaign.
Staff and students are invited to run or walk the sponsored mile, on Monday May 12 at 3.30pm, along a designated route around Wood Lane Recreation Ground, Marple, in a bid to swell funds for Kidney Research.
Martha, from Marple, is suffering from FSGS, one of the many diseases that affects kidney function and has less than five years until her kidneys fail completely, meaning would face the rest of her life on dialysis.
This is the second in a series of events which are being hosted by the college following a visit from Martha and her mother Paula to thank students and staff for their involvement.
The first event, a one-day fundraiser by Child Care and Education students, raised £800.
Paul Kirkham, the college's Head Football Coach, said: "We have all been touched by Martha's plight.
"She is a delightful little girl, full of fun and mischief which has motivated us all to get behind the campaign.
"Furthermore, we are delighted that Blackburn Rovers player Christopher Samba has agreed to start our event."
• The college is also hosting 'Martha's Weakest Link' on Wednesday May 14 at 7pm in the Theatre Space, Buxton Lane Campus, Marple, with celebrity contestant Nigel Pivaro, formerly Coronation Street's Terry Duckworth.
Tickets are £2.50 and available from the reception at Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College on 0161 484 6600.
