A BLITZ on illegal parking is set to hit motorists across the High Peak.
Two tiers of charges will also be in force as Derbyshire County Council takes over parking enforcement from the police.

Cabinet member for environmental services, councillor Brian Lucas, said: "From 24 November if you park where you shouldn't it's highly likely that you'll get a ticket for parking illegally."

That's when the County Council, working in partnership with the district and borough councils, will take over responsibility for parking enforcement on the County's streets and car parks.

There will be two levels of charges, with the top charge, £70, the Council state, given out for the most serious offences such as parking in a designated disabled parking place without a valid badge. The charge for committing lesser offences will be £50.

Both charges will be halved, to £35 or £25, if they are paid within 14 days. However, if a charge is not paid within 28 days then it will be increased to £105 or £75.

Parking powers will transfer from the Police to the County Council, subject to final government approval.

The Council will appoint a contractor to patrol the County's streets and car parks, to carry out the work previously done by police traffic wardens.

Councillor Lucas said: "Local people will notice our parking officers out and about making Derbyshire a safer place.

"Safe and sensible parking leads to improved safety for drivers and pedestrians."

Money raised from parking fines will pay for the parking service. If the service makes more than it costs to run, any extra cash raised will be put towards road improvements.

A central ticket office will be set up to process all the penalty notices issued.
