FIREFIGHTERS spent around four hours tackling a blaze at a derelict school gymnasium in Whaley Bridge.
The suspected arson occurred in an outbuilding at Taxal Lodge School on Linglongs Road at around 2:22am on Sunday.

Buxton, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Whaley Bridge and Bollington fire crews used four main lines to extinguish the blaze, before leaving the scene at around 6:02am.

There were no reports of any injuries.

There was speculation that the offenders had put down wires in order to trip up emergency service personnel inside the building.
But a police spokeswoman said: "They had been there for a long time — they had ivy growing on them.

"There's nothing to suspect otherwise."

If any local residents have information in relation to the suspected arson, Derbyshire Police can be contacted by telephoning 0345 123 33 33.
