A NEW MILLS councillor has been urging residents to support calls to safeguard rail services between Stockport and London.
An online petition was launched in response to concerns that trains to London, and on other long-distance routes, could start passing through Stockport station without stopping.

It calls for the enforcement of an Act of Parliament which, campaigners say, requires all trains travelling across Stockport Viaduct to call at Stockport/Edgeley station.

Cllr Lance Dowson said any changes to the rail services would affect High Peak residents.

"I was a bit surprised when I heard about this, and hopefully as many people as possible will sign the petition," he added.
The petition can be viewed at petitions.pm.gov.uk/Stockport-trains/.
The deadline to sign-up by is today (Thursday).
