Squash decline is a sign of the times

THE DECISION to remove squash courts at New Mills Leisure Centre is a sign of the times, according to local councillors.
Their comments came after a letter was sent to New Mills Town Council questioning the decision.
Members heard that the centre, which will be run by DC Leisure on behalf of High Peak Borough Council, intended instead to install a new fitness suite.
Cllr Tony Ashton, leader of the borough council, said: "It is a fact of life. Since the boom of the 1970s squash has been in decline.
"They tell me the usage at New Mills Leisure Centre is less than 25 per cent.
"For three quarters of the time the squash courts are not being used, therefore the idea is to put something in which is used more by the community and therefore provide a better service."
Cllr Glynn Jennings said: "If it is not being used, fair enough. Put in something that is a known requirement."
He said the existing fitness suite at New Mills Leisure Centre was used continually and was probably overused.
