THE PROSPECT of a replacement school for Thornsett took another step forwards as Schools Minister Jim Knight said he would look 'sympathetically' at the school's request for a new building.
The comment came after the issue was raised in Parliament on Monday by High Peak MP Tom Levitt.

He said the Minister had strongly implied that now Derbyshire County Council has listed the school as a priority for replacement, there was no reason to doubt that it would happen.

Concerns had been expressed that Government criteria for replacing school buildings related not just to their fabric but to their performance.

Guidelines suggested that where new buildings could lift poorly performing schools to higher levels of performance, they should be given priority whereas Thornsett School was performing well despite the poor conditions.

The Department for Children, Families and Schools advised Mr Levitt that the guidelines were not binding and that it was up to local authorities to decide what priority was given to replacing which schools.
