Mural is 'fitting tribute' to the Kinder trespass

A LASTING memorial to the Kinder Scout Mass Trespass has been unveiled in the waiting room at New Mills Central Station.
Local artist Claire Parker designed and created a stunning mural through the different mediums of paint, mosaic and sculpture, with help from mosaicist Richard Siepp and joiner Rob Hindle.
Made up of three panels, it shows the crowd gathering for a photo-call prior to the trespass in April 1932, the contrast between the Kinder landscape and the mills where many of the trespassers worked, and finally a walker in 2008 enjoying the breathtaking views.
Northern Rail teamed up with High Peak and Hope Valley Community Rail Partnership, Derbyshire County Council and East Midlands Tourism on the project.
Mark Barker, from Northern Rail, said: "The railways played an important role in opening up leisure opportunities for workers during the industrial age, but it is thanks to the brave determination of those that took part in the mass trespass and others like them that we enjoy the freedom of the countryside that we have today.
"Our services still bring thousands of people every year from the cities of the north and further afield to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Peak District and I'm delighted they'll be able to visit this fitting tribute to those that took part in the mass trespass."
