MP backs bid for new school

A DESPERATE plea for a new school building is being made by a group of parents and governors from Thornsett School.
As the Advertiser went to press they were set to lobby councillors to try and get the school included as a priority on a list of school building projects to be determined by the County Council.
A 570-signature petition will be presented to Cabinet Member Alan Charles and questions will be put to members by parents and Ward Councillor Beth Atkins.
"Two years ago Thornsett Primary School was in such a bad state it was in the top two schools in the County on the remainder list of schools waiting for a rebuild. Now it isn't even on the list at all,"she said. "People are very concerned about it. A lot of people have written – even the children who have got together and done their own CD."
Last Friday High Peak MP Tom Levitt expressed his 'solidarity' during a visit to the school.
"The advice I have had from the government is that if Derbyshire wants to invest in a new school for Thornsett, it can," said Mr Levitt.
"I don't believe that the new guidelines on capital spending prohibit spending that sort of money on a successful school if its buildings are as poor as they are here."
Headteacher Alice Littlehailes said: "We are pleased to have our MP's support, as ever."
