A COMPETITION to design the logo of a new Toy Library, to be launched in New Mills next month, attracted a large number of entries from local children.
Judges had a difficult job in picking the winner with the first prize going to Jack Strang. Runners-up were Ella Brett, Nicole Baxter, Vincente Belli, Mhari Jennings and Rhiannon Frost.

The Toy Library, which will serve the local community, will be based centrally at St Georges Church of England Primary School on Church Lane in New Mills.

Head teacher Philip Thomas, said: "I was delighted to have the prospect of such a useful resource based at our school, which also has a nursery. At first the Toy Library will be aimed at the under fives and then it hopes to expand to older children."

Beverley Wildgoose has set up the library with the help of Voluntary Toy Library worker Janice Pelham. After discussing the development with County Councillor Beth Atkins it was decided that a logo was needed and the art competition was organised.

Cllr Atkins said: "I offered to sponsor the competition from my Derbyshire County Council Community Fund and to help judge the entries.

These were over 60 drawings of an excellent quality and Bev and I had some hard decisions to make. In the end we narrowed the entries down by ruling out some pictures that would have made lovely posters and focused on finding a picture that photocopied well and could be reduced legibly to create the logo."

The Toy Library is due to open on June 2.
