ORGANISERS of New Mills Festival are de-light-ed by the success of their popular lantern procession.
Bumper crowds attended the annual night-time parade through The Torrs on September 27, followed later at Newtown Recreation Ground by music from White Van Man and a firework display.

Ian Mason, Chairman of New Mills Festival, said: "For the lantern procession, we counted 2,998 people walking through the gorge, which was a fantastic turnout, and that didn't include people who went straight to the Recreation Ground.

"The number and quality of the lanterns had to be the best ever."

The 2008 festival drew to a close with a Last Night of the Proms event at New Mills Art Theatre, with High Peak Orchestra.

Added Mr Mason: "As far as we can determine, all of the events were really well supported. Twenty-five different organisations in the town put on an event, which is why it is New Mills' community festival."
