EMERGENCY crews worked for nearly two hours to rescue a young male who became stranded on a cliff in New Mills.
Officials say the male had been found clinging to a rock ledge some 45 feet above the busy Manchester to Sheffield railway line, after jumping over the wall of a steep embankment at Rock Mill Lane to retrieve a football.
A specialist rope rescue unit, based at Matlock Fire Station, was drafted in to assist retained firefighters from Whaley Bridge in the dramatic rescue on Tuesday afternoon.
"It was a sheer drop and the casualty was clinging to the ledge about 45 feet above the floor," commented Ian Redfern, Blue Watch Crew Manager at Matlock Fire Station and a member of the rope rescue unit which attended the scene.
"We were mobilised along with a crew from Whaley Bridge.
"Using a rope working pack, they managed to send a firefighter down to secure the casualty until we arrived, so we could set up a safe system to pull him back up."
The British Transport Police were notified about the incident, but reported no disruption to train services.
