THE Derbyshire Holstein Club recently hosted "The Holstein Celebration" on behalf of Holstein UK - an annual event which moves around the country and is organised by a different county each year.
This year it was based in Buxton and members from England, Scotland and Wales were welcomed by the Derbyshire Club Chairman, John Hollingsworth.
The first day started with a visit to Chatsworth House and Gardens. Later a farm visit to view the "Me
ldamar" Herd of Melvyn and Dianne Shepherd & Sons which is on the Chatsworth Estate. They are the reigning Champion Herd in the Western Region of the UK.
In the evening there was a visit to Fernydale Farm, Earl Sterndale to view the "Sterndale" Herd owned by Bill Nadin and the "Peak" Herd owned by Yasmin Bradbury. The evening concluded with a hog roast.
On the second day members travelled from Buxton to Trent Farm, Newton Solney in the south of the county to view the "Dovetrent" Herd of S Holdcroft & Sons. They are the present Champion Herd on Inspection and Production in Derbyshire.
An alternative for the ladies was arranged, visiting the Blue John Mines at Castleton and Lady Bower Reservoir in the north of the county.
The afternoon programme included a farm visit to the "Damdale" Herd of Messrs Fletchers at Damdale Farm, Peak Forest, near Buxton. They are the present Champion All Round Herd in Derbyshire.
The two-day event concluded with a Gala Dinner at The Palace Hotel, Buxton.
The Guest Speaker was Peter Slack who gave a very amusing talk.
