BUXTON Sea Cadets have been enjoying a highly successful and interesting time recently.
The weekend of May 9 to 11 saw 26 cadets and four staff at Hollingworth Lake. Despite difficult sailing conditions, eight cadets achieved Stage 1 Sailing qualifications and a good time was had by all.
The Commanding Officer, his deputy and two committee members attended a reception hosted by Captain Jeremy Blunden on HMS Bulwark on Friday May 8 and met the officers and crew of the ship.
On May 12, eleven of the older cadets and two staff, together with personnel from Rhyl and Stoke Units, had a taste of life at sea on this Royal Navy warship. As they sailed from Liverpool down the Mersey on the Monday afternoon, the cadets lined the ship. They arrived in Devonport on Wednesday May 14, after a range of activities, which included operations in the engine room and the bridge, steering the ship, learning to pipe from a qualified instructor, doing PT, watching a "man overboard" drill and a fire fighting exercise and experiencing the test firing of a main armament.
All the Buxton cadets benefited from this trip and were praised by the ship's company for their disciplined contribution to the ship's activities.
In April the unit won the North West Area small bore shooting competition for the second time in succession and retained the Chetwyn Cup.
Leading Cadet Anthony Hargreaves achieved the highest individual score and was presented with the Peter Gravestock Trophy.
Fundraising continues, in particular with an individual effort by William Vithoulkas who has raised £30.
The unit will be holding its Annual General Meeting at the Silverlands at 7.30pm on Tuesday June 17. All parents and those interested in the Sea Cadets are welcome to attend.
