A DOUBLE race win for American Ben Spies saw him close the gap at the top of the FIM Superbike World Championship at Derbyshire's Donington Park on Sunday.
Spies led both races from the start on his Yamaha World Superbike and the double victory saw him reduce the gap between himself and championship leader Nori Haga (Ducati Xerox) from 48 points to just 14.

The Texan rider started on pole for the eighth time this season and despite being pushed all the way by Italian Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) in race one, the newcomer converted his start position to his ninth victory of the year. Biaggi secured second position despite encountering a fuel problem on the last lap and the final podium position went to Japan's Nori Haga.

British rider Leon Haslam (Stiggy Racing Honda), enjoying the race at his home circuit, got the better of fellow Brit Shane Byrne on the Sterilgada Ducati to finish fourth.

Misano winner and British racer Jonathan Rea (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) could only manage seventh, behind Japan's Shinya Nakano (Aprilia Racing).

American John Hopkins (Stiggy Racing Honda), Czech Jakub Smrz (Guandalini Racing) and Japan's Ryuichi Kiyonari (Ten Kate Honda Racing) rounded out the top ten.

Race two saw Spies secure his tenth win of the season in comfortable style.

Max Biaggi was again fighting for second place but crashed on the fourth lap before clashing with fellow Italian Alessandro Polita (Celani Race) as he rushed to rejoin the action. Both riders somehow managed to stay on their bikes but Biaggi ended up finishing 21st.

Following Biaggi's mistake, Nori Haga, who was looking to improve on his race one result, crashed heavily on lap five while pursuing Spies and had to be taken to hospital in Derby with a fractured vertebra. He has since undergone a successful operation on the injury and is expected to take part in the next round of the championship at Brno.

Haga's crash meant Leon Haslam moved up to second and the Derbyshire rider delighted much of the 61,000 strong crowd by securing the second spot on the podium after an almighty scrap with Italian Michele Fabrizio and Shane Byrne, which ran pretty much to the final flag.

Haga's team mate Fabrizio eventually put his Ducati Xerox in third place ahead of Byrne in fourth.

Yorkshire man Tom Sykes improved on his failure to finish in round one by taking the fifth position on his Yamaha World Superbike ahead of wildcard rider and British Superbike Championship leader Leon Camier (Airwaves Yamaha) in sixth.

Kiyonari was in seventh place with British wildcard rider James Ellison (Airwaves Yamaha) in eighth, Spain's Ruben Xaus (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) in ninth and Simon Andrews (MSS Colchester Kawasaki), the third British wildcard rider in tenth.

Coventry's Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha World Supersport Team) rounded off a fantastic day for the British riders by winning the World Supersport Race after an entertaining battle with Spaniard Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki Motocard.com). Crutchlow's title rival Eugene Laverty (Parkalgar Honda) crashed out at the Melbourne hairpin but the Irishman rejoined the race, eventually moving from 22nd place to finish fifth overall.

Triumph secured their first ever podium in Supersport when Australian Garry McCoy put the Parkingo Triumph BE1 in third spot after a storming ride.

Belgium's Xavier Simon (Ducati Xerox Junior Team) won the Superstock 1000 race ahead of Italian Claudio Corti (Suzuki Alstare Brux) and France's Maxime Berger (Ten Kate Honda Racing) and in the Superstock 600 race, Italy's Marco Bussolotti (Yamaha Italia Trasimeo JR) took his first win of the year ahead of Britain's Gino Rea (Ten Kate Honda Racing) and Frenchman Jeremy Guarnoni (MRS Racing).
