Synthpop stars’ blast from past
Heaven 17
Sheffield synthpop stars Heaven 17 are to make a second appearance at Buxton Opera House’s Four Four Time Festival of Live Music this February.
Following their massive hit concert at the Water Street venue in 2011, the band will return to present in its entirety The Luxury Gap, their second album and biggest commercial success, in addition to many of their greatest hits.
Heaven 17 rose to prominence in the 1980s, out of ashes of the first Human League line-up when keyboardists Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh left the band and joined together with vocalist Glen Gregory. The group released their debut album –Penthouse & Pavement in 1981, which mixed the art-school electronics with which they had made their name, lush funk arrangements and overtly left-wing political lyrics.
This was followed by The Luxury Gap in 1983, featuring the hit singles Temptation, Come Live With Me, Crushed by the Wheels of Industry and Let Me Go, and further success followed with tracks including This Is Mine and Sunset Now.
In recent years Heaven 17 has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity with sell-out tours across the UK.
Their core line-up of Ware and Gregory augmented by the soaring backing vocals of Billie Godfrey has enabled the group to finally recreate the studio-based sounds of their albums on the live stage.
