Here are two photographs showing the changing face of Buxton’s skyline over the years.

One eagle-eyed reader spotted the first photo (top, BA3051) in our November edition of Memory Lane, but with the wrong caption.

It shows the demolition of Buxton’s gas works in 1965, which were situated on the present Morrisons supermarket site.

Every town used to have a gas works and gasometers to make ‘town gas’ from coal. It was dirty, back-breaking work which ended with the discovery of natural gas in the North Sea.

The second photograph (BA1351) shows the construction of Spring Gardens Shopping Centre, now renamed The Springs, in the early 1980s.
