Two centuries of New Mills Band marked

A series of celebrations is being planned to help mark the 200th anniversary of New Mills Band.

A summer extravaganza is planned for the end of June, to take place in High Lea Park.

The event on Saturday June 30 will see New Mills Band joined by Thornsett and Chapel Bands and there will also be a special appearance by the famous Fairey Band.

In September a celebratory concert at New Mills Town Hall will be held in the presence of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and other dignitaries.

Members of the Town Council, who have agreed to act as trustees, were also told that St James’ the Less, currently being transformed to a new arts centre, will be the new home of the band, providing somewhere to practice and rehearse.

The meeting was told that the band, one of the longest established brass bands in the country, was very grateful forthe support from the new arts centre and the Town Council.
