Romans return to their old spa

ROMAN times will be brought to life with a visit of a Centurion to Buxton as part of the Well Dressing Festival.

The Lone Legionary, a Roman re-enactor who belongs to the 'Vicus' group, will be at St Ann's Well on Thursday July 9, from 10.30am, all day. He will be demonstrating and displaying Roman customs.

This year St Ann's Well will show a scene from Roman Britain commemorating Buxton's Roman heritage. The reason that the Romans are thought to have come to Buxton was the presence of the warm waters. The importance of the waters to the Romans was reflected in the name – Aquae Arnemetiae. The only other Roman city in Britain with the Aquae prefix was Bath.

The Market Place Well, entitled 'The World of Plants', has been inspired by decorations in the Natural History Museum in London, which illustrate plants from every corner of the globe. They reflect the eras when specimens of plants were being collected from all around the world, causing massive interest in the natural world.

The Young People's Well will be decorated by pupils from Buxton Community School. They will be decorating the wells with their own very innovative and original designs based around the 30th anniversary of Buxton Festival Fringe.

To see the wells being decorated, members of the public can go along and watch this engrossing craft as the designs come to life at St John's Church, Buxton, on Thursday July 2 from noon to 8.30pm, Friday July 3 from 9am to 8.30pm and Saturday July 4 from 9am to 5pm.

The Blessing Ceremony is on Sunday July 5 starting at the Market Place Well at 2pm and then continuing to the other two Wells, accompanied by both Fairfield and Burbage Bands.

Also on Sunday is the crowning of the 2009 Wells Dressing Festival Queen, Miss Holly Cole and Rosebud Miss Isabel Eccles in St John's Church at 3pm. The Queen and her retinue will then tour the town.
