REVIEW: Razorlight rock Opera House

DESPITE being a place more used to hosting operas and theatre, Buxton Opera House rocked out to the sounds of Razorlight on Monday night.

The band played the theatre as part of a series of small intimate gigs before hitting larger arenas such as Manchester's MEN and the 02 arena in London later this week.

Tickets for the gig sold out within minutes of going on sale in January as fans seized the opportunity to get up close and personal with the band. And they weren't disappointed.

Up and coming indie band Hatcham Social provided support and their catchy songs seemed to be a hit with the capacity crowd.

But it was Razorlight they all wanted to see. Frontman and singer Johnny Borrell drew a deafening cheer from the audience as he strode on to the Opera House stage sporting his trademark t-shirt and skinny jeans and the screams only got louder when he later greeted the crowd with "Hello, Buxton."

Kicking off with Back to the Start, the band played a storming set which featured songs from their three studio albums, Up All Night, Razorlight and the recently released Slipway Fires.

Old favourites such as In the Morning, America and Golden Touch lined up perfectly alongside less known songs including Tabloid Lover and the beautifully haunting Funeral Blues.

It was refreshing to see so many of the area's younger generation take advantage of the facilities at the beautiful Opera House and we can only hope now that the success of Monday night's gig will open the door to many more such gigs.

The only disappointment of the night was perhaps that the show wasn't nearly long enough for the hundreds of people who had ventured to the Opera House to catch a big name band like Razorlight on their own doorstep, cutting out the usual journeys fans make to cities such as Manchester and Sheffield to see their musical heroes.
