Brave Edwyn battles back to health

EDWYN Collins' music career came to a shattering halt in 2005 when he suffered two cerebral haemorrhages.

The musician who had a worldwide smash hit with 'A Girl Like You' and who was one of the foremost figures on the Glasgow post-punk scene with the band Orange Juice, has since had to fight his way back to health.

He even had to go through the painstaking process of learning to read again, and learning how to draw with his left hand, having lost the use of his right.

Having overcome huge odds Edwyn is now ready to star at Buxton Opera House on Friday February 13, opening the FourFour Festival.

He has also released a new album, Home Again, presented a successful exhibition of bird drawings and begun to play the festival circuit, including Glastonbury and the BBC Electric Proms.

Edwyn's career began in 1976 when he became lead singer for the musical group Nu-Sonics which later became Orange Juice in 1979.

The band released their first record Falling and Laughing using indie label, Postcard, a vehicle especially set up by Edwyn's school-friend Alan Horne to release Orange Juice recordings.

The Postcard label (whose motto was The Sound of Young Scotland) went on to prove a key influence in recognising indie-pop movements and signed bands such as Aztec Camera.

Orange Juice, who were known for their love of kitsch and had a look which included coonskin hats, plastic sandals and cavalry boots gained success with Rip It Up, Falling & Laughing, Simply Thrilled Honey, Lean Period and What Presence?.

After Orange Juice disbanded, Edwyn went on to perform as a solo artist finding success with international hit songs such as A Girl Like You and Magic Piper of Love.

He was also music producer for The Proclaimers.

* The show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets for Edwyn Collins are priced at 21 and 23. Call the Box Office on 0845 127 2190 or buy online at www.buxtonoperahouse.org.uk.
