I'm writing this with regards to a full page advert in your newspaper a couple of weeks ago.
It was promoting independent retail business in Buxton. Please let's see more like this.
Towns across the country are putting forth similar messages in local newspapers and on the internet as independents are closing at a rate of 2,000 a year and
chain stores are on the increase (House of Commons All Party Parliamentary Small Shops Group 2006). Our local shops, including grocers, butchers, bakers, tea rooms, hardware stores, bookshops, galleries and newsagents give Buxton its identity, adding to its distinctiveness, colour, variety and charm.
The chain stores are bland and identical to all others in the country, selling the same goods. Do we want a high street to match all others, another "clone town"?
Our independents add to Buxton's individuality. It has its own rich history, architecture and culture and this can only be complemented and enhanced by local businesses, who continue a long-held tradition of supplying vital goods and services, boosting our local economy and helping community spirit to survive.
It is in local shop windows like Bestsellers or The Wild Carrot that you will find a variety of adverts promoting social events in the area, yoga classes, music lessons, book clubs, mums and tots groups to name but a few.
These local shops also provide you with a warm welcome and a friendly face, a personal service with expert advice when you need it, discounts for regulars, students and the retired and a swift order service for products they don't have in their shops.
Many local shops, such as the Cafe at the Park and the Wild Carrot have the environment and ethical trading high on their agenda and are working hard to support and promote good causes and use local and/or organic produce where possible.
It is entirely within the power of the consumer, within our power to help our independent retailers just by using them. By keeping community spirit alive. It's with our support and money that they can survive, continue to provide and improve.
I congratulate you on helping this cause. May you continue in your support.
