Helping us to keep our cash

I FIND it bizarre that County Councillor Beth Atkins chooses to compare the Stockport Unitary Authority and its budget of £492 million pounds with High Peak Borough and its budget of £12 million. Surely a better comparison would have been with Derbyshire County Council – where she herself is a Councillor.
However, she neglects to mention one key variable. Liberal controlled Stockport increased Council Tax in the current year by 4.5% whereas High Peak's increase was 3.0%, this despite Stockport receiving a 3.1% increase in Government support – but High Peak only received a 1.0% increase.
Conservatives believe that the best way of supporting local business is to let residents keep as much of their own money as possible. To this end we are proposing to freeze car parking charges for a third year.
I also find it hypocritical that Councillor Atkins tries to project the local Liberal Party as supporting local business. She is one of the Liberal controlling group on New Mills Town Council that would not support the Borough's "Shop Local" campaign in spite of my pleas that we should act in support of the town's shopkeepers.
